  1. Let’s continue with this and tackle more episodes. Slice-of-life comedy is nice.

    Commentary for Episode 49

C3#5. FLASHBACK - Roof of Mungsey Hospital (night).

YJ: (examines his chest) Oh! A pneumothorax?! Ren-Bo!! Ask a nurse for a hollow tube, or else a pen

haha. Just like in the very first episode

    #5. NIS Villa, Garden (day).

RB: (smiling) Can't hear a thing, Nikita-kaka! (note: "kaka" sounds like "caca", poop in French)

I can’t help but think that if you’re gonna be making this denser and less accessible, it might have been filled with so many wordplays.

#10 Professor Park is a cool support character.

#11. NIS Villa, Garden (day). Yeah, it’s going to be mundane. I’m conditioned to believe this is just being at the eye of the storm.

C14#2. TV. Good to see they’re back. I’ve been wondering why they seemed to have vanished. I forgot the detail.

    #19. Jeju, Seaside Resort (evening).

It says 6 months after the Crossover. Time is moving fast in this episode, huh?

    C20#2. Terrace, Beach side.

    Su-ran: (sees him ogling her)

Well, if you’re pairing Captain Ryu with YJ, it’s plausible. When he mentioned his divorced wife, I couldn’t help but think of Song Hye-kyo since you’re using a SJK avatar.

    C20#3. Terrace, Middle.

With the director complaining, KC is the counter-example of being a good actor due to experiencing the things he was portraying.

    C20#5. Beach.

Su-ran makes a move fast. In C20#2. She was probably delighted Captain Ryu fancies YJ.

C20#10. Terrace, Buffet. It amuses because it’s RB doing it. Other people doing it would make me scream, Barbarian!

C20#14. Beach. Whoa! You primed me for Captain Ryu but it ended up with DY kissing Han Hyo-joo. Nice!

#26. Soo-Bong's Courtyard (morning). It’s nice to see SB trying to learn how to fight.

The scenes surrounding this has this relaxing pace, even if some of the characters are sad.

    #34. Min-Soo's Apartment (late morning).

Looks like this is the end of the slice of life parts. Since Da-Ye is starting to vanish, I can suspect that she has become part of W after getting interested in KC, who unfortunately rejects her. This makes it similar to Yoon So-hee.

    #37. Sung-Moo's Office (noon).

Now this is a gigabrain move if you’re able to resurrect him.

    #38. Hagal-Dong Park (noon).

I now suspect the Narrator has taken the form of SM here. Who would kill these characters anyway?

    Conclusion

The episode is mostly slice of life like you said. It lacks most of the drama or heavy actions of the previous episodes. But to me, it is a much needed break.

I love the few scenes leading up to the cliffhanger. I think this one does it better compared to the previous episode.

    1. Hi.
"Just like in the very first episode"
Yes. 🙂 Just she didn't need to use a pen this time. And now, Professor Park hasn’t only saved Oh Sung-Moo (season 1), he has also saved Kang Chul!

"it might have been filled with so many wordplays."
A real problem for writing that is supposed to be translated into English. While writing, I tried to remove at the root all the frequently used French idioms. However, since I started correcting the translation, I realize I still used quite a few. So I have to find an equivalent English idiom. Wordplays aren’t common, fortunately, but there are a few, requiring a less faithful English idiom that still reflects the pun.
Here, I just left it. “Nikita” is the name of the famous movie spy woman (and since Su Ran is a spy…). It’s a very unlikely line from Ren-Bo. (Or a real stroke of luck if she saw the film, or let’s say a film with the same title in her world). It assumes she knows two or three French words, which is more likely since she knows a few Spanish words. Her unpredictable mind is good at memorizing improbable things she found funny, in a disordered way (like a vulgar word in another language, or tongue twisters).

"Yeah, it’s going to be mundane. I’m conditioned to believe this is just being at the eye of the storm."
Some scenes are funny or interesting, but others bring little and are “mandatory passages,” such as the description of Ren-Bo’s arrival in the village of Hagal-Dong. It’s supposed to be a quick montage that would work on TV, but in the script it’s not great.
But effectively, this episode is meant to give the feeling of being in a suspiciously calm period. It’s almost impossible to imagine there would be 5 episodes after this of the same kind.

"Time is moving fast in this episode, huh?"
There are several time jumps, and the last one is “one year after the Crossover.”

"KC is the counter-example of being a good actor"
It’s been a joke since the beginning of the drama: KC is really a bad actor. He can do everything, he can learn anything, except that! It’s not something that depends on intellectual ability.

      "DY kissing Han Hyo-joo."
They had met in a previous episode (I don’t remember which one, around Ep20, at the mid-drama party).

#34 "Looks like this is the end of the slice of life parts."
The first foreshadowing sign is in #27, when the petal of the pale yellow flower bends at a right angle.

"Who would kill these characters anyway?"
If the episode were aired on TV and viewers had a week before the next one, I think they would arrive with quite a bit of theory-building, and probably some of them would find the correct theory.

Cliffhangers vary. It’s hard to hit the right moment while keeping an episode free of dead time and without additions (fillers) just to pad the length. I hate that when I watch a drama. Every scene I put is sincere or necessary (I imagined them with pleasure), but with hindsight and time, I notice that some are weaker than others. My opinion isn’t always right; I remember that sometimes you liked scenes I found weak, so they must have contained something that escapes me. A lot of it comes from intuition and inspiration (which magically gives the right thing), and I control that less well than experienced drama writers who are better at focusing.

There are a bit of all kinds of cliffhangers. A double cliffhanger in episode 27 (one of the best, along with the one in this episode 49). Episode 14 has no cliffhanger at all, just the conclusion of a mini-story. The essential thing is to have a strong moment, not necessarily a hook to resolve, even if most of them rely on that principle of action or mystery left hanging.
